House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan issued the following video release after the United States’ national debt surpassed $15 trillion: “Today marks an infamous day in American history. It is the day that the national debt has surpassed the $15 trillion mark. This debt is hurting not only our economy today, but will result in our children and our grandchildren experiencing a diminished future. And the President – rather than tackling this challenge, rather than facing up to our debt – is pur... Read more

This week the House is expected to consider the first conference report providing full-year appropriations for agencies funded through three appropriations bills: Agriculture; Commerce, Justice, and Science; and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development. Combined the three bills provide a total of $130.4 billion including $2.3 billion of “disaster relief” funding. Excluding the disaster funding the bills are $757 million below the levels funded in 2011. Including the disaster relief funding ... Read more

I feel honored tonight for a special reason. Twenty-one years ago my mentor, the late Jack Kemp, was given the very first of these awards. And he loved receiving it. He loved to quote “Sir Winston,” along with his other political heroes, Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. He admired these men because of their dedication to the power of ideas – especially the idea that human freedom and equality of opportunity were the greatest forces for good the world has ever known. Twenty-one years ago – ... Read more

Earlier today, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan joined MSNBC’s Morning Joe to advance principled, pro-growth reforms, and express disappointment at the President’s failed policies. On President Obama’s Inability to Defend His Record “Look, I think [the President] can’t run on his record because the results are fairly dismal…I’m very concerned that his rhetorical shift has turned away from being a uniter toward more of a divider - preying on resentment and envy, pitting people against ea... A Disappointing Presidency http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNGjITVF4xY To my great disappointment, it appears that the politics of division are making a big comeback. Many Americans share my disappointment – especially those who were filled with great hope a few years ago, when then-Senator Obama announced his candidacy in Springfield, Illinois. Do you remember what he said? He said that what’s stopped us from meeting our nation’s greatest challenges is, quote, “the failure of leadership, the sm... Read more

Thank you so much, Ed, for that kind introduction. We’re here today to explore the American Idea, and I can’t think of a better venue for this topic. The mission of the Heritage Foundation is to promote the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. These are the principles that define the American Idea. And this mission has never been timelier, because these principles are very much under threat from polici... Read more

Now that one of ObamaCare's major new benefit programs has been scrapped, liberals are trying to make stone soup by claiming that the Obama Administration merely committed an act of "good government." They claim that when this long-term care insurance program proved to be unworkable, the Administration conceded as much, and now it's gone. So let's review the evidence, not least because it so perfectly illustrates the recklessness that produced the Affordable Care Act. When Democrats were pasting... Read more

WASHINGTON – Today, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin issued the following statement regarding the Obama Administration’s decision to discontinue a key component of its health-care law: “To hide the true cost of their health-care overhaul, the leaders of the Democratic party loaded it with gimmicks and double-counting. One of the most egregious of these gimmicks involved the CLASS Act, a new long-term care program that was scored as an offset against the ten-year, trillion-d... Read more

America is greatly in need of strong, competent leadership. Our nation’s total debt is now larger than our entire economy. Unemployment is painfully high and growth is painfully slow. Since taking office, the president has accelerated Washington’s reckless spending spree, has added trillions of dollars to the debt, and has refused to present a credible plan to put Washington’s fiscal house in order. Meanwhile, Congress is divided. Republicans control the House, Democrats the Senate. As required ... Read more

The Problem: According to the CBO, spending on Medicare and Medicaid is pulling America towards a debt-fueled economic collapse and, unless reformed, the programs will implode, thus depriving the neediest in our society of a crucial safety net. Moreover, the President’s healthcare law has made things worse by increasing the cost of care and adding to the national debt. From the speech: “At its core, the health care problem is one of inflation, driven by the overutilization of services, dramatic... Read more
