Pelosi, Lowey, Yarmuth Sound Alarm on 2018 Budget and Appropriations
Washington, D.C.--House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Nita Lowey, and Budget Committee Ranking Member John Yarmuth today issued the following statement regarding the Fiscal Year 2018 budget and appropriations process:
“It is outrageous and inexcusable that eight months into the fiscal year, there is no budget, no agreed-upon discretionary spending levels, and no apparent plan to fund the government past September or avoid a catastrophic default on the full faith and credit of the United States. The Republican Congress has failed to pass a budget by the April 15 deadline and has not considered any of the 12 appropriations bills in Committee. If no action is taken quickly, we will be relegated to passing another continuing resolution or even worse, another Republican Government Shutdown. The Republican Congress is dithering toward disaster.
“Furthermore, it seems Republicans can’t agree amongst themselves about when and how the debt limit should be raised. A failure to take this basic step would be catastrophic for our economy and for working families.
“Democrats stand willing to work with Republicans on responsible spending legislation and to prevent a catastrophic default. However, we will not help enact laws that shift more burdens on the shoulders of working families. It is long past time to get serious on the challenges we face.”
