Rep. John Yarmuth Reelected Chairman of House Budget Committee
WASHIGNTON, D.C.— Today, Representative John Yarmuth (KY-03) was reelected Chairman of the House Budget Committee by the Democratic Caucus. This will be Chairman Yarmuth’s second term serving as leader of the Committee. He has been a member of the Committee for more than a decade, serving as Ranking Member during the 115th Congress and Vice Ranking Member during the 114th Congress. Chairman Yarmuth released the following statement upon his reelection:
“It has been a privilege to serve as Chairman of the House Budget Committee and I am deeply honored that my colleagues have entrusted me with another term. During the 116th Congress, the Budget Committee conducted important oversight of budget execution and identified abuses by President Trump along with shortcomings in budget law. I am committed to passing the Congressional Power of the Purse Act, legislation I introduced this year, to ensure our laws are strong enough to prevent executive abuse and preserve Congress' authority.
“Under my leadership, we were able to enact a bipartisan two-year budget that finally brought an end to the austerity level spending caps. With the expiration of the caps, I look forward to overseeing a return to the traditional budget resolution, which we can use to truly meet the needs of our communities, foster an inclusive recovery, and rebuild a stronger economy than what we had before.
“Without question, the top priority for all of us is effectively responding to the COVID pandemic and the resulting economic fallout, and I will ensure that the Budget Committee does everything it can to support this critically important effort. I am excited about the important work ahead of us, and I look forward to working alongside our Committee members, House Leadership, the Biden-Harris Administration, and all of my House colleagues as move our nation forward.”
