Paul Ryan on America's Jobs Deficit, Government's Budget Deficit & Washington's Leadership Deficit
Paul Ryan at the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference - You all remember 2008 when we had a financial crash and the start of the Great Recession. We saw millions of Americans -- friends, families, constituents -- lose their jobs. We saw millions of jobs lost and trillions of dollars of wealth vanish. The 2008 financial crisis caught us by surprise. We didn't see it coming. And ugly crisis legislation emerged from that. I want to ask you a question. What if your Congressman, your Senator, your President saw that financial crash coming? What if they knew it was going to happen, when it was going to happen, why it was going to happen, but more importantly, what if your Representative in Congress, what if your President knew what needed to be done to prevent it from happening and had the time to do so but decided not to because it just wasn't good politics. What would you think of him? Well, that's where we are right now. We have the most predictable most preventable economic crisis in our history. And what are we doing? We're playing politics. We have a leadership deficit in Washington right now. We have a debt crisis coming. We know that government cannot keep spending money we don't have. And yet we see what we are doing to our children and our grandchildren. We know without a shred of a doubt that we are giving them a lower standard of living. Less prosperity and less opportunity. We are living at their expense right now. This costs us jobs now. It's telling entrepreneurs and businesses don't invest, don't take risks because they don't know what the government is going to do to you next. In the House, we have advanced a plan to tackle this crisis now before it tackles us.
