Chairman Arrington Statement on President Trump's FY26 Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, President Trump released his skinny budget requestfor FY2026.The budget calls for spendingreductions across government while maintainingsupport for critical programs and priorities.
Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-Texas) released the following statementonPresident Trump’s budget proposal:
“President Trump's budget reflects his bold and unwavering commitment to reining in Washington’s runaway spending, right sizing the bloated federal bureaucracy, and putting our nation on a path to balance.
“President Trump’s budget is a battle plan for restoring economic freedom and fiscal sanity in Washington before it’s too late.”
Background:
- The President’s skinny budget outlines a historic 22.6 percent reductionin non-defense discretionary spending. This represents a $163 billion decrease from FY2025 enacted levels.
- From 2000 to 2024, the federal government increased annual discretionary spending nearly 220 percent— $584 billion in 2000 compared to $1.9 trillion in 2024.
- From 2000 to 2023, income security programs increased 245 percent, $31 billion to $107 billion.
- In 2024, outlays, or actual dollars spent by the federal government, totaled $6.8 trillion—23 percent of the entire U.S. GDP. Deficit spending totaled $1.8 trillion which is equivalent to all of the discretionary spending for 2024.
- Non-defense discretionary continues to outpace defense spending, totaling $960 billion, or 53 percent, of 2024 discretionary outlays.
- Under President Biden, the average deficit was $1.9 trillion—an increase of 137 percent compared to the average pre-COVID deficit under President Trump.
