Chairman Arrington, Task Force Chair Yakym Laud Budget Process Reform Member Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX), Ranking Member Brendan Boyle (D-PA), Budget Process Reform Task Force Chair Rudy Yakym (R-IN) and Members of the House Budget Committee held a Member Day Hearing to solicit new ideas on how to reform Washington’s broken budget process.

The Committee understands the need for input from Members across the political spectrum and from those representing all walks of life. Undertaking transformative action cannot happen without collective buy-in. The Committee appreciates the time and effort put in by the 11 members who participated in today’s hearing.

After the hearing, Chairman Arrington and Budget Process Reform Task Force Chair Yakym released the following statements:

“Fifty years ago this week, the Budget Committee passed what would become the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974. For the first 25 years, it worked. Budgets were passed on time, there were joint resolutions signed by the President, and things were rocking along. The last 25 years, I would argue, it almost never worked. We have to keep having conversations like these and figure out how to fix it. Let's get to a point where the American people can have confidence that we are running the people's house, and the people's business, the way they run their businesses, their families, their local and state governments. It's just that simple,” Chairman Arrington said.

“Restoring fiscal responsibility in Washington is the issue of our time and one of the top reasons I ran for Congress. I am excited to chair the Budget Process Reform Task Force and appreciated the opportunity to hold today’s Member Day Hearing. Going forward we will continue to zero in on real reforms and solutions that fix Congress’s badly broken budget process, drive down the spending curve, and ensure the next generation can achieve a bright and prosperous future,” Budget Process Reform Task Force Chair Yakym said.
